2020 Music Summary

Writer's picture: Luke BendallLuke Bendall

I've released a lot of music this year, despite 2020 being one of the most unpredictable years we've had. While I've had my own up's and downs this year, I'm still super proud and positive of the music I've released. So here's a summary of the music I've released, with some explanation behind the projects. (Click on the artwork to stream or buy the music).

Blue:

Blue is my first album and one of the biggest projects I had taken on for the last year. I started making this album on the 3rd of march, back in 2019. I was eager to start making an actual album. Something that carried themes and a story.

Subconsciously, I believe the whole album was inspired by a game I played called Subnautica, where you explore the ocean in another world after crashing there. I found it rather interesting that the music in the game was electronic. From there I started to experiment with sounds in my DAW, trying to think of a way to start this album.

As the album developed, I wanted to weave several styles and themes into it. I started to move away from doing only electronic to blend electronic and orchestral together for this album. Once I had finished the whole standard edition of the album, I knew I wanted to make a deluxe edition. I've always personally found that deluxe edition songs are some of the best tracks so I wanted to try and capture that. (Though for me, the best track from Blue was Noctiluca Scintillans).

After about a good 6 months of producing and mixing the album (along with work and university)the album was ready to be mastered. I started to think a bit more deeply about the story behind the album, talking with people about the ideas I had. I ended up changing the story's ending as it seemed a little too morbid. (See my blog "Blue - Story behind the Sound" for the story behind each track). Fast forward a couple more months, around the time I released Boom, and I mastered the album. It was a fun project to take on, especially as I had no time constraints at all and it was what I wanted it to be, so I really enjoyed my experience with it.

Blue came out the 23rd of March.

Hellbringer:

Hellbringer was a completely different experience, mostly because it was a uni project. We could make whatever we liked and at the time, I was obsessed with DOOM. Mick Gordon's music was really intriguing to me and I wanted to try and capture that sound in my own way.

I heavily dived into trying to make a dark and unusual atmosphere while attempting to make some "Heavy" rock music for the first time. I'd bought Shreddage 3 Stratus (since I can't play guitar myself) and started working what I had. It took about 2 months to make but it was a good learning experience with trying my hand at heavier genres.

Hellbringer came out the 30th of April.

The Lost Light:

This was an EP I started a long time ago before I even realised I wanted to make it as an EP. It stemmed from a track I made back in October 2019 called "The Soul Forest". Inspired by Ori and the Blind Forest (a game I highly adore and what became the reason I wanted to make music for games), I wanted to try and make my own style of music that suited the world of Ori. I loved how well the track turned out so much, that I started to make more music for the EP once I had finished Blue. I loved experimenting with more organic and orchestral sounds, helping me really vary my range of genres. It took about 9 months to make the EP, with most of that time focusing on Uni and releasing Blue.

The Lost Light came out the 3rd of August.

Nova Anthem:

I started on this track back in may 2019. I was experimenting more and more with electronic music and samples back then, trying to make something that sounded cool. Nova Anthem was the result. It was one of the first tracks I was truly excited about, from mixing to mastering. Looking back at the first demos for it, I called the track "Suck it" as it felt like some energetic game music for combat or movement orientated games. Eventually the name was scrapped for Nova Anthem as I felt it suited so much more (especially as it also features on my next big project that is themed around space).

I love how well the whole thing turned out and was especially proud of how good the artwork looks.

Nova Anthem came out the 27th of November.

B.B.M

Boss Battle Music (or B.B.M for short) was a project I started way back in college (February 8th, 2018). Inspired heavily by the music for Necrozma in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon, I wanted to make a dramatic battle theme. I remember focusing on making the chorus section very loud and powerful, using French horns, strings, synths, organs and a bunch more stuff. I really wanted to hone into that dramatic feeling to it. I also wanted to make the music feel somewhat endless, where the theme doesn't quite fully resolve.

I released it 2 years ago onto soundcloud, then looked at it again this year. I gave the mix and master a slightly adjustment and created the artwork for it afterwards.

B.B.M came out the 18th of December.
