The Best Songs of 2019

Writer's picture: Luke BendallLuke Bendall

This year has given a difficult choice of singular songs to be in the cream of the crop, so it's taken a little while to choose. Here you go:

1. Minami - Hollowness

This song is my favourite of this year for many reasons. First of all, the lyrical content is extremely good. From my perspective, it deals with self conflict, creating another image of yourself then delving too deep into becoming that person and almost loosing who you are in the process. "I will not lie to you again, You can keep my words" is the perfect ending to this track with the vocals sending goosebumps down my arms and the instruments creating a gorgeous ending. The instruments are perfectly blended together to suit the style this track demands. I also adore the vocals that Minami shows in this song as they feel raw and end this track with a powerful cry. I could listen to this track all day, every day.

I love this track from start to finish and promise you that this track is amazing.

2. Aimer - i-mage <in/AR>

As explained in my blog "The Best Albums of 2019", this song is just amazing. The crescendo this track builds up really drives each layer to evolve throughout. The vocals are amazing along with the lyrical content of this track.

Definitely worth a listen.

3. Aimer - Stand Alone

I HAD TO WAIT WAY TOO LONG FOR THIS TRACK TO BE RELEASED. I kid you not, I spent about 2-3 months checking iTunes every day so I could by this god damn song. When it finally came out in the UK store, I immediately bought it. I've listened to this song over and over and I adore it. I think the song speaks for itself in why I feel that it's one of the best tracks of 2019. As per the usual, the vocals are amazing and so are the instruments. Yet another amazing track from Aimer.

4. Hikaru Utada & Skrillex - Face my Fears

Although I haven't played any of the Kingdom heart games, I loved how this track sounded when it was released. The way this track has been made feels almost perfect, with the vocal chops and chorus sounding awesome. It's one of my favourite game themes (and maybe one day I'll play Kingdom hearts). Also love how colourful the artwork is.

5. Lauren Aquilina - Tobacco In My Sheets

Struggling to deal with things, Lauren just lets her words speak honestly. Talking so honestly, how could you not love this track? Almost begging for answers about things she doesn't understand, while talking about things she's not too proud of, Lauren just lets out what she needs. I love how honest this track is and how delicate it feels.

Again, this is another song that definitely is worth the listen.

6. Rival Sons - Back in the Woods

How do you start an old school rock track? Just jump straight in with the drums and lead into a freakin awesome rhythm. This is an awesome rock infused song, with the guitars roaring for your attention, especially during the solo. The lyrics are awesome along with the vocals. A fun and good track to listen to. Highly recommend.

7. CHVRCHES - Death Stranding

What an amazing song this is to accompany the game "Death stranding". With a retro pop style infused with echoey drums and powerful vocals, this song is another great theme song.

8. Violet Skies - Is She Gonna Be There?

Now I'll be honest, I only heard this song just over a week ago. And I'm glad that I saw the song live first. Violet is an amazing lyrical writer with a pure and honest sound to her vocals. This track is personally one of her best from the I'll Buy A House (Acoustic) EP.

9. Yorushika - Rain with Cappuccino

I loved this track when I first heard it and it was the main reason I got into Yorushika. The visuals for this song were also amazing and helped portray the story behind it. Really good song from a really good album.

10. Slipknot - Critical Darling

The first time I heard this track, I enjoyed it more than I thought. Really good track with good guitars, drums, bass and vocals. Personally felt like the best track from this album.
