Blue - Story behind the Sound

Writer's picture: Luke BendallLuke Bendall

In this Blog, I will be explaining the story behind each track of my first album. I thought it would be fun to let everyone understand the album further so without further adieu, let's get into it:

1. Below Depth

(As it was the first track off the album, I needed to set the scene).

Below Depth represents the deep underwater world the listener is about to enter, giving a dark and mysterious introduction to this unknown world. I felt that subtlety was the best choice for this track, so there was only a small amount of layers used to create the ambience behind it.

2. Submerge

Submerge puts the listener into the perspective of this character I had created for this album. He's an explorer of foreign worlds far from earth and is sent down to this new underwater world. Submerge sends him diving into the world "Blue" for the first time and emphasises on the unknowns this world has for him.

3. Vibrance

As the above mentioned character starts to get comfortable in the new world, he starts venturing out from where his small underwater base is. Vibrance represents him seeing the nature and creatures in this huge underwater planet for the first time, emphasising on the harmony this world contains.

4. As the Ocean Sways

The character decides to take a break from looking at every nook and cranny of his surroundings, then decides to return back to base for a while. While looking at the view from his base, the world offers a calm and relaxing canvas. As the Ocean sways represents the blissful blue he sees, creating a peaceful image of a vibrant world.

5. Explorer

The character decides to continue his research of this world and ventures further to see what more there is to uncover. With more creatures, plants and nature around every corner, Explorer represents the excitement and intrigue of finding new things.

6. Emperor of the Sea

Along his tracks, the character comes across a deep dark area, with very little creatures but larges amounts of nature. As he delves further into this area, he comes across the biggest and most mysterious creature of this world known, which later calls the Emperor of the Sea. This track represents this grand encounter of such a creature and gives the character an understanding of what secrets this world holds.

7. Marine View

After such an intense encounter, he decides to return back to base and take in what has just happened. In doing so, a cluster of creatures happen to venture past the base, playing with one another. This track gives the character another reminds that this world is still peaceful, just with a few bigger creatures floating around too.

8. Noctiluca Scintillans (Fireflies of the Sea)

The character wakes up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. He decides to sit by a window and stare out into the dark ocean. In doing this, he notices small feint lights moving around in the distance. As these lights get closer, he notices that they are small creatures glowing brighter then anything else. They begin to circle and dance with each other, creating a gorgeous display that completely takes the characters breath away. This track represents this view and is also one of my favourite tracks from this album.

9. Those Before us

(This track's concept has always been vague and took a while to figure out its true meaning.)

The character has discovered that this isn't the first time humans have explored this world. With evidence of man made constructions in this ocean, he is completely shocked. To his knowledge, there had been no other attempts to explore this world. This track represents the discovery of humans who had passed away in this vibrant blue.

10. Where They Will Never Find Me

(Originally, this story took quite a dark and morbid turn. Although I originally liked where it went, it made for a very unusual and strange ending which then became the reason for this story to change.)

This track represents the characters choice to return home and no longer be apart of this world or remain there and make this world his new home. He decides that he does not want to go back and comes up with a plan to become hidden from the rest of humanity so he can stay there in peace, while keeping the disturbance by other humans to a minimum. To do this, he tells the rest of the humans that this world is dangerous, before cutting off any form of communication with them and giving the impression that he has passed away. In reality, he now lives freely in this underwater world and understand more of it.

Deluxe Tracks

11. Eternal Blue

This track represents the purity of this vibrant world being kept away from harm. With the character making sure that this world is not touched by humans who are hungry for it's resources, this blue world continues to thrive.

12. The Ilumus Zone

This track represents the character searching for the home of the Fireflies of the sea. In doing so, he comes across an oddly illuminated and secluded cave of which the Fireflies hide in during the day. After exploring it further, he decides to name it the Ilumus Zone.
